Open Mike takes place Wednesdays from 8:00 - 11:30 (sign up at 7:45) at Paddy Barry's in Quincy. Come on down and enjoy the famous Paddy's "vibe". People here love live music.
Email me with any questions, or call Paddy's at 617-770-3620.
In the spirit of "what the hell" open-mic-edness, this dynamic duo challenged one another to give it a go. Ringers, both of them. Rod Stewart's "If Only" was a standout.
Alex has a voice that's darn near operatic, with dynamics to spare. He plays great guitar as well. He does "Fire and Rain," for example, in the letter-perfect James Taylor arrangement. That on its own is worth the price of admission.
Chris just can't stop himself: he's gotta play, and he's never done the same thing twice since he started coming to Paddy's. Great fun.
Sean came down for the first time tonight to give us a rousing set of Irish tunes, his specialty. Excellent singer, and a great guy.
Tom came back again, and sounding as good as ever. His posse came with him as well, and they all raised holy heck on Tom's behalf.
Brian ripped through a ton of songs tonight. I really didn't want to make him stop, so he didn't. Everyone loves Brian.
Noel's original songs are melodic flights of fancy, and he puts them across effortlessly.
This is bad, really bad. My fault entirely. I simply cannot find where I wrote her name down. If anyone knows her identity, please contact the authorities. She sang beautifully.
Here's a little-known secret about our own Bob: he's a fifth-grade teacher by day. I only wish my own fifth-grade teacher had been as cool. I might have learned to play guitar.
Jim came back to take everyone to class again. Class and more class. Beautiful jazz chords and smooth, soulful vocals. Everybody stands in awe when Jim plays.
The ever-popular Jimmy (at right) came directly from another gig in Quincy to rock Hancock Street for a while. Jimmy's a first-rate guitarist and a captivating performer. Here he's seen joining forces with the formidable Bob McDermott.
The magic that is Bob lit up Paddy Barry's once again. As the song goes, "Love Is All Around" wherever this musical pied piper goes.
Her friends insisted Deborah get up on stage, and what a treat it turned out to be. She sang her heart out on an impromptu medley of songs by Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash.
Not to be undone, Veronica leapt up on the spur of the moment to grace us with some Gaelic Sean-Nos ("old-style" acapella) singing that was powerful and moving.
